India has been playing cricket since 1932 when they played their first test match against England. Since then India has come a long way and currently, India is considered one of the best teams in the world. As of 18th May 2021, India is ranked in the top 3 ranks in all the fromats of the game. Though the team hasn't always been this strong and have seen some lows as well. Here are India's best and worst ICC rankings since its inception in the sport.
<h1><center>Test Cricket</h1></center>
India's worst ranking ever in Test cricket was recorded in the early 2000s under the captaincy of Sachin Tendulkar. India was going through a rough patch at that time as some of the Indian cricketers were caught in a match-fixing scandal. India was ranked <b>8th</b> at that time. The captaincy was passed on the Sourav Ganguly from where India saw an upward trend in the rankings
India's best ranking in the test cricket ever is/was <b>#1</b>. India first tasted the joy of number 1 ranking in test cricket in <i>1973</i>. Then after a big wait, India again reached the number 1 place in <i>2009 which lasted till mid-2011</i>, under the captaincy of M.S. Dhoni. Later under the captaincy of Virat Kohli, India gained number 1 rank again in <i>2016 and held the ranking till the end of 2020</i>. After winning against England, India regained the number 1 rank and currently holds it.
<h1><center>ODI Cricket</h1></center>
Indian cricket has perfromed pretty well in ODI cricket. India has two world cups to their name in this fromat. India has held the <b>number 1 ranking</b> in cricket multiple times. The first time India was ranked 1 by ICC in ODIs was in <i>1994</i> under the captaincy of Muhammad Azharuddin. This was 11 years after winning the first ODI World Cup.
Later India went through a bad patch because of the match-fixing scandal and the Ganguly-Chappell controversy. India went down to <b>rank 7 in 2005</b> under Rahul Dravid after losing multiple matches against Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and South Africa. Since then India has received the <b>number 1 rank seven times</b> in ODIs but for short time periods under the captaincy of M.S. Dhoni and Virat Kohli.
<h1><center>T20I Cricket</h1></center>
T20I is still is a new fromat in this game. The first T20I international match was played in 2005. India played her first T20I match in December 2006. India won the first T20I World Cup that was held in South Africa in 2007. India gained the <b>number one T20I ranking twice</b> since then. The first time India reached the number one spot was in <i>2014</i> under the captaincy of M.S. Dhoni. India gained the number one spot briefly under Virat Kohli's captaincy as well in <i>2020.</i>
India's worst T20I ranking was recorded under the captaincy of Virat Kohli as well. India was ranked <b>5th in 2019</b> in the T20I ranking table. Since then India has been doing well in this fromat of the game.
